On November 18, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous
Region (XUAR) has completed the annual task of winter wheat sowing over a total
of 788 thousand hectares. Sown areas in the southern XUAR reached 553 thousand
hectares and that in the northern XUAR were 235 thousand hectares. The total
planting area this year is larger that of last year, and thus the goal of
mainting the planting area from 2020 was achieved.
According to reports, the planting progress of
winter wheat in Xinjiang in 2021 will be essentially the same as that of 2020,
and the southern XUAR was the first region in Xinjiang to complete planting. In
the northern XUAR, priority is given to ensure that basic farmland is used for
wheat production first, and adjustments of planting structure oriented to increase
grain production are promoted.
Xinjiang authorities aim to expand grain farmland and develop farming
technology
In recent years, through administrative
promotion and scientific and technological innovation, Xinjiang has promoted a
strategy of harboring grain through land and technology. Food security has been
effectively guaranteed, and comprehensive grain production capacity has been
comprehensively improved. Xinjiang's grain output will reach a new high in
2021, during which the total output is expected to increase by 10.8%, achieving
the increases in area, unit yield, and total output. Yields are expected to
exceed the grain production targets set by the Party.
The southern XUAR has further coordinated the
production of fruits, grains, and planted wheat on uncultivated land and
high-quality farmland as much as possible, so as to realize the whole process
of standardization and mechanization, which will improve the overall yield.
The year 2021 is the first year to implement a
policy in which government officials and general Party members share equal
responsibility for food security in XUAR. All regions, including provinces and
cities, attach great importance to the planting of winter wheat, and so efforts
are being implemented to mobilize farmers and other production entities to
plant winter wheat, as well as stabilize and expand the winter wheat planting
area.
All regions of China push to increase grain production
At the same time, Xinjiang's departmants of
agriculture, rural affairs, finance and other areas have actively coordinated
with the relevant state departments to increase the scale of subsidies for
wheat planting in Xinjiang, raise subsidy standards, and boost farmers'
enthusiasm for wheat planting. The development and reform, supply and marketing
departments have striven to ensure stable supply and stable prices of
agricultural materials such as diesel, seeds, and fertilizers. During the
winter wheat planting period in 2021, Xinjiang has a sufficient supply of
agricultural materials and stable prices, which provides a strong guarantee for
winter wheat planting.
Recent data shows that 27 of the 31 provinces,
autonomous regions, and municipalities of China have increased their grain
production during the year of 2021. In particular, Xinjiang, Anhui, Hunan,
Sichuan, and Shandong all increased their production by more than 500 million
kilograms. These increased yields come after similar efforts to broaden summer
grain planting across all of China.
